Fandom list - update of 2023

With Yuletide around the corner, and for my own poor memory's sake, it's time for my yearly-ish fandom list update~! Fandoms are divided into three categories (Active/Like/Nostalgic).

Fandoms where I write fanfic, meta and/or roleplay.

Anime & Manga

  • Bleach (I kept up with the anime and manga somewhat, both before and after my sister showed me the musical. I like Burimyu a little better than the manga and anime though, since it's less padded. Favorite pairing: Kira/Gin & Kira/Matsumoto/Gin. Favorite character: Ichimaru Gin.)

  • Rook & Rose - M. A. Carrick (Favorite characters: Derossi Vargo. Favorite pairing: Pretty much anything with Vargo, but I'm especially enjoy Grey/Ren/Vargo and Iascat/Vargo~ Also, I love that Vargo is coded as aromantic <3)

  • Sherlock Holmes - Book canon is my all time fave. I like some TV versions too, like Jeremy Brett's series, but I'm out of love with BBC Sherlock's canon (Favorite character: Sherlock Holmes. Favorite pairing: Watson/Holmes)

Ohh let's see... I like Murderbots but not enough to be fannish. Same with Good Omens (both the book and the show). I read a bunch of Elfquest comics some while ago after trying to give the audiodrama a go but sadly, that was a disappointment. I really should rewatch Firefly, tho, it's been ages.

I do love The Untamed (which you already know), and hooboy, I have quite a few favorites. Wangxian, obviously, but also nieyao and xiyao. I got surprisingly invested in WZL/YZY some while ago. JGY is one of my absolute favorite characters, especially when he's still his devious and cunning self but for the good.

I'm the same about several things I really enjoy - the canon is great, but for whatever reason I just don't get inspired to write fanfic for it. It's interesting how our brains pick and choose what to be fannish about and what to "just enjoy" 😆

And ooooh boy, yeah, the Elfquest audiodrama isn't exactly...good, so I can see how that put you off😅 But yay for Firefly rewatching! I should do that too some day soon 😊

I could read about Wangxian getting together in a million different ways and I'd still be reading more 💖 And I adore all combinations of Lan Xichen/Meng Yao/Nie Mingjue! Shipping them allows for so much Drama~

Boy, I am still so bad at the name abbreviations in this fandom 😅 WZL/YZY is Wen Zhuliu/Yu Ziyuan, or am I mistaken? I've seen some very interesting takes on that ship, so I can totally see the appeal! And Jin GuangyaoIMeng Yao is such a good character 💖 I tend to prefer fics where canon diverges and lets him live and/or he finally gets the help he needs to feel secure and loved enough to use his cunning for Good, so to speak.

My favorite character ended up being Lan WangjiILan Zhan - I am a sucker for "Vulcan like self-control hiding Vulcan like passion" characters 😁

Which version of The Untamed is your favorite? The live action series was my introduction to the canon, so I think I sort of "imprinted" on it 😆

Yes, it is. To me (and so many else) it's glaringly obvious those two have History when they stare at each other in Lotus Pier. *purrs*

Funnily enough, the drama didn't rouse any fannish feels in me when I first watched it--I mean, it's Very Pretty and Xiao Zhan is gorgeous but...I was a bit meh. Then I read the novel (in a week) and BAM, that was it. But my main visual is the drama with frankencanon nitpicks from the novel and the animation. (I haven't read the manhua and my Chinese skillz aren't enough for the audio drama.)

Oh yeah, those two absolutely had Something all but burning between them 🔥🔥🔥 Totally a ship I can get on board!

Funny, I had a similar-ish experience with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I first read the book and didn't think back on it much, then the miniseries came out and my brain just went DING 😆 And after watching the miniseries I reread the book and suddenly just LOVED it. Fandom, it can strike at any time 😉

I think I enjoyed the live action drama so much because I'd already been "spoiled" on who was who and had seen a lot of fanart and meta for it, so I was riding a hypewave together with a few friends and was pretty into the characters and ships already while watching. I do think the novel has many "superior" traits (m/m relationships actually being Officially Canon, the moral greyness getting to be more grey, etc) - the drama just happens to be my first love + I really enjoy how they do their damnedest to signal how much Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are In Love without being able to actually state it out loud.

I read the novel in fantranslation before there was an official one I could get my hands on and I didn't really get into it the same way I got into the live action version. I'm going to give the novel another try now that I can get my hands on an official translation, to see if that makes the experience different. I've begun both the animation and the manhua, but am very early on in both of them. I'm pretty much caught up on what's canon for all versions of the story though, so no worry about spoilers 😊
