nonesensed: Vaporeon brace for impact (Vaporeon brace for impact)
I'm finally truly slowing down here at the end of the year. We've got seven days left of 2025 and I hope everyone is having a good end of the year. I certainly am! Vacation is here at last and I can recover from all the things I've put myself through since January πŸ˜…

Yeah, this did not end up being the self-care year I had planned. At all. In fact, I've not worked this much overtime since I had my old, shitty job that gave me actual burnout. Wheee. Everything that could go wrong at work definitely did, this year (in ways that no one could help).

Will absolutely aim to take things slow for a long while and to NOT do this to myself again. My loudest wake-up call was now in December when two massages therapists, independent of each other, made the O_O-face when assessing me. Going to take a while to recover but it is doable. I just need plenty of rest.

BUT! I still managed to write 50k words on one of my book projects during November and I finished my Yuletide fic in time, so all is not terrible by any means of the word. And I have plenty of personal plans for next year, to prevent myself from taking on too much work or "work" (+ I've had everyone who would be "picking up my slack" agree to not overwork themselves either, which is the biggest win of this year for me!)🩡🩡🩡

Speaking of Yuletide, I got this wonderful Bioshock Infinite fic πŸ’–Highly recommended!

Only two episodes in and I'm already head over heels for this season πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’– We have it all: political drama, a mysterious betrayal, characters with shared pasts, players who are having a blast and already shipping each other's characters left and right, thrilling cliffhangers and sooooo many dark secrets~!

Link to the show's playlist on Youtube.

In other news, I'm still working far too much. I'm techincally not working (much) overtime this month, buuuut I now have students to mentor, and we don't get any extra compensation for the hours we put on mentoring students - other than the obvious benefit of having future coworkers.

So yeah. But come November things will have calmed down!!! I swear it!

I had to stay up and work until 2am on Friday (aka Saturday morning) but I am finally fully caught up with work!!!

I'm still a little mushy-minded - just permanently lost 489 rosaries in Hollow Knight: Silksong fighting regular enemies πŸ˜… - but my stress is completely gone πŸ’—

Since my sister couldn't visit this weekend due to train issues, we and a few friends have been hanging out online this weekend. I also took the time to get my nominations in for [community profile] yuletide / [community profile] yuletide_admin, which you can see over on the Nomination Coordination Station.

I even managed to make promo posts for the fandoms I've nominated:
- BioShock Infinite
- Candela Obscura
- Killjoys (TV)
- Monstress (Comics)
- We Used to Live Here - Marcus Kliewer

Hope everyone's had a good weekend (or that the upcoming week will be better)! I'm still hard at work catching up with everyone here on DW, but I'm looking forward to reading everyone's posts πŸ’–

My current stress relief is getting waaaaay too into a video game - a fairly popular one, so I'm dodging spoilers like crazy πŸ˜…

Anyone else playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 right now? I've reached Act II and am suitably emotional about what's happened in-game thus far πŸ˜πŸ’– Don't think I'm playing "optimally" 'cause I never was good at turn-based strategy games, BUT I am almost good at dodging and parrying, which is something at least πŸ˜†

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, here's the trailer (and a song from the game's soundtrack, 'cause it's neat):

I worked past midnight yesterday BUT I AM NOW ON VACATION!!! I'm having such a chill day today, it's wonderful πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’— I've gotten some writing done and some cleaning as well. And I finally have the energy to get to another Snowflake Challenge~!

Snowflake Challenge #12 )

So hyped for writing right now! I'm rereading a number of my WIPs and having fun outlining and tweaking them. Hoping to get something actually finished before Monday, but don't want to jinx things *knocks on wood*

Snowflake Challenge #7: Create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.

While I wouldn't say I've been afraid to ask for any of these, I still thought I'd make myself a little wishlist, since tomorrow is my birthday and all πŸ˜† This will also double as a rec list of cool things πŸ’–

1) Recommendations for AMVs, fanvids and animatics! Fandom doesn't really matter, but if it's in a fandom I'm familiar with that's a bonus πŸ’– I used to be really good at finding videos like this, but with how algorithm-broken the internet is, it's getting harder and harder to find new ones. Here's a link to awesome animations (fandom and non-fandom) I've found and an AMV/MEPs list, though my categorizing is a little wishy-washy and mixed πŸ˜… Also, fandoms I'm more active in get their own playlists, like Critical Role and The Magnus Archives, with a mess of both animatics, interviews and other things related to the fandom.

2) Recommendations of "fake" video games! Aka people who make fake screenshots, manuals and such things for games that don't actually exist and aren't planned to exist either. I've been vaguely aware of and interested in such things for years, but this Supereyepatchwolf video on the subject really got me hooked. I'm even making a few of my own together with my sister and a friend, and I'm always happy to find more!

3) Recommend me artists you love! The internet is so vast and the algorithms so broken that I have a harder and harder time finding new artists to follow. Here are links to some of my favorite artist, as examples:
Alex Ries
Allison Theus/BeastofOblivion
ArcaneGold
Caemiel Lilium
CanaryWitch
Cassandra Jean
Dappermouth/Jenna Barton
Eleth
Eliot B.
Janna Sophia
Kiikiibee/rakugaki
King Cholera/Cheyenne (both some horror and NSFW here)
KM Steere (have a lovely commissions of my late great cat from this artist)
Linnpuzzle (who I extra recommend because she's not only a great artist but also a great friend and great to work with on commissionsπŸ’– Link to her tumblr.)
Luce Northstar (has both NSFW & horror art - have commissioned art from them several times and they've been brilliant to work with!)
Morteraphan
N*KIM
Natalia Drawing
Owlyjules/Julie W.
Phobs
pocketss
Ram Lightly (has NSFW content)
Sasha Vinogradova
Secondlina (creator of the glorious "Crow Time" comic!)
semochka (blood and body horror)
Sergei Demidov (some body horror)
Shalizeh7
Shark in a Bottle
SJ Miller (body horror & gore!)
Wolfskulljack (horror elements)
Wrat
(Yuumei) Wenqing Yan

#6: Share your favourite piece of original canon.
I have so sooo many! And most of them are huge spoilers (for a recent example, looking at you The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley) so I've been having a hard time picking one to share. Finally, I decided to go with an old fave:
Season 2 episode 22 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "The Wire".

As much as I enjoy Garak as a character over all, this is easily my favorite episode both of him and the way it focuses on his relationship with Bashir. I love the whole thing, especially the ending scene between Garak and Bashir.

Note to self: I should reread "A Stitch in Time.

To my fellow Garak fans: What are your favorite Garak moments? And I'm always happy to receive fic recs 😁

Challenge #15: Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.
2024 brought some sorrows, yet I had not one but THREE unexpected joyous fandom experiences:

1) Mononoke - aka the one that isn't Princess Mononoke - getting more movies, with a ton more lore 🀩🀩🀩🀩

2) Okami sequel announced!!

3) Star Trek: Lower Decks making Garak/Bashir a canon couple, at least in an alternative universe, re-sparking my interest in DS9 (bringing this post full circle~)
nonesensed: My cat is a happy cat (Default)
Planning on doing all of these challenges, but work is still busy, and I'm booked for both D&D 🎲 and a cat cafe visit 😻 this week, so here's a quick combo of some challenges out of order! 😊

#4: Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be to set your own goals! Of course we can all make large or ambitious goals, remember that small and/or short goals are also good!
I've set up some goals for the year, but to be fandom specific, I'm hoping to finish at least two fanfics other than the Yuletide fic I'll sign up to write at the end of the year. Aiming to have a The Goes Wrong Show fic finished soon and then that crack fic fake research article about My Little Pony biology I promised my sister literal years ago... Better get to work!

#5: Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.
Oh, so many things! I've either met or stayed in touch with most of my closest friends thanks to fandom. I've gotten way better at text analysis, English and introspection, plus I've developed writing skills that help me both in the work place and when I create purely for fun. 10 out of 10, would recommend 😁

#10: In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless!
Let's go with first LARP! I was in my early teens (though I honestly don't remember exactly how old πŸ˜…) and I got to tag along with my friend and her younger sister for a really big LARP by Swedish standards. My friend's sister had been LARPing for a while, so we got to stay in a big fancy tent in the village with her group instead of in regular tiny modern tents way farther off into the woods. There was a lake nearby, which was fortunate 'cause it was such a warm summer week. First time skinny dipping too πŸ˜†

#11: In your own space, share your love for a trope, clichΓ©, kink, motif, or theme.
Definitely loyalty! I adore themes of loyalty in all forms of fiction: loyalty being rewarded, loyalty being ill-advised, loyalty being hard to shake off; any and all takes on the subject I'll eat up like delicious chocolate πŸ’–

#13: Interact with someone in fandom you haven't talked with before.
I've just fully joined the Watchmaker of Filigree Street fandom and am leaving comments on fics by authors I've never interacted with before as I devour my way through AO3 πŸ˜πŸ’™πŸ’–

Waaaay behind on this, both posting and reading other people's entries, but I'll do my best to catch up this week 😊

Challenge #3
In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

Oooooh, that's a long, long list. I've been in fandom for a good 25-ish years at this point, and I'm a very different person now at 36 then I was at 11 - which I hope is no surprise to anyone πŸ˜†

To pick one of the most prominent changes, I'll go with "question why you like certain things". For example, as a kid, all my favorite characters were boys and men. I was very convinced all female characters were boring and one note (I grew up during the 90s in a small town in northern Sweden so the idea of anything outside of female/male didn't reach me until my late teens at the earliest).

Part of this has of course been internalized sexism (yay...) but I've come to realize that's not the whole answer, because I have instantly gone "that's my fave" about female characters without first having to deconstruct my gut reaction. Turns out that the tropes I like in my favorite characters rarely get to be portrayed by non-male characters in the kind of way I enjoy. My solution thus far has been to create my own favorite characters in non-fanfic projects, expand on interesting background characters from my fandoms + dive deeper into main characters I might not have taken an instant liking to, to see if there might just be something of my kind of thing in there πŸ’–

In contrast with that, a way simpler "I didn't think I liked this thing" situation is M/F ships. Turns out I like them just fine, it's the heteronormativity of some fics or canons I read/watched early on that put me off πŸ˜…

Falling behind on everything due to work (+ a minor infection, yay...) but looking forward to both participating more in and responding to other people's posts in the Snowflake Challenge + answering comments and reading up on everyone's blogs. Am just aiming to catch up with Critical Role first. I've been 20 episodes behind for half a year now, and I suspect we're close to the campaign finale. I'm hoping to catch up so I can watch that as live as possible with my time zone.

It's going okay so far, watching ep 111 of 119 as I type this.

CW: Talk of pet death )

Hoping for more energy and time this upcoming weekend.
