nonesensed: (Bloody long book)
Time sure keeps moving forward whether I keep track of it or not ๐Ÿ˜† I'm still playing catch-up on everything, but by doing one thing at the time, I'm actually making progress - huzzah!

One thing I'm getting to today is going through what books I read last year.

In 2025 I read 90 books, which I'm fairly pleased with. Sadly had to give up on the Book Bingo I was doing because I didn't have the brainpower to think through my book choices - but there's always next/this year ๐Ÿ˜Š

If you're curious about what those 90 books were, here's a link to a summary on Storygraph.

Some thoughts and comments )

Those were my book thoughts from last year! And I've already got started on my reading for this year ๐Ÿ˜

Any books/comics/manga people are really looking forward to read?

Several of my coworkers are still on sick leave, so I'm currently a little extra overworked ๐Ÿ˜… And I'm a little extra grumpy 'cause my sister was going to visit this weekend, but due to the ongoing storms her train has been canceled and a replacement route doesn't seem likely ๐Ÿ˜ž

I'm keeping moral up by borrowing an inadvisable amount of books from the library at once ๐Ÿ˜† Other than reading books I own, like the D&D book Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants, Terry Pratchett's The Wee Free Men, Jeff VanderMeer's Absolution and a Swedish book on cognitive behavioral therapy, I'm currently reading:

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, Last Days by Adam L. G. Nevill, The Reformatory by Tananarive Due, Occultation and Other Stories by Laird Barron, Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks, The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson, Hell House by Richard Matheson and Heartsong by T. J. Klune.

As you probably can tell, I am mainly in a spooky mood~

I've also figured out one of my nominations for [community profile] yuletide_admin - 'cause I need some fix-it fic (and/or worldbuilding) for Marcus Kliewer's We Used to Live Here.

Last month I finished the book bingo [personal profile] kingstoken created for 2024, but Iโ€™ve not had time to post about it until now ๐Ÿ˜…

Not much writing or editing getting done right now, but I've finished the Book Shelf Buster challenge over on Storygraph that I signed up for a while ago, and I've read 72 of the 60 books I'd challenged myself to read over on Goodreads. The 2024 Book Bingo is also coming along nicely.

Went for my first run in a long time too, today. Only 1.5 km, but with how long it's been since I last ran and how that tends to make my asthma (exercise induced asthma no less) act up, I'm counting it as a win.

Trying to complete that fic tropes ranking list meme I've seen going around, buuuut I'm stuck on what exactly the "Ex-ex lovers" trope icon refers to. There are so many nuances on that trope and I feel very differently about a number of them.

Got a real rough workweek ahead - the "I need to get up an hour earlier than my usual 5 am and I'm not sure I'll get to eat lunch until Saturday" kind. Can't wait until after the 7th of September, since things should calm down a bit more then.

Time to hit the hay!

Too much inspiration, too little time

I've had Thursday and Friday off work this week and was hoping to get some writing and reading done. I've managed the reading part, but the writing has been limited to world building 'cause I read the latest volume of Monstress (excellent comic series but WITH ALL THE TRIGGER WARNINGS).

I've kept the exact details to my "access list", but I'm a little out of it right now due to illness in my family (I'm not ill, but a family member is, and I'm being a huge worrywart about it). Looking forward to catching up with all the fun conversations and interesting blog posts on here as soon as my head is less full of wool ๐Ÿ’—

Doing my best to reduce my stress levels, but the darn delayed commuter trains and tech issues at work made today a Very Late Day at work. To counteract all this I have weekend plans to write, hopefully post a fic for [community profile] snowflake_challenge and read - both here on DW, fanfic and a lot of books I've got waiting for me here at home.

While not at work, I'm distracting myself from my nerves by reading The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell and The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. I'm only about a third way through them, but enjoying them thus far!

Here are five book trilogies I've recently read that I really enjoyed! Posted in alphabetical order, I enjoyed them all equally:

1) Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. Love its wonderful, surreal world. Horror yet not. Will definitely re-read one day!
2) The Children of Time trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky. What if non-human-animals developed 'sentience', in SPAAACE~?! Loved this exploration of self-awareness and how different animal species might take to it should humans meddle with their genetic code. Update: I've been reminded that, unlike myself who think they're adorable, a looot of people are uncomfortable reading about spiders. So yeah, this is a book series about sentient spiders, beware!
3) The Last Binding trilogy by Freya Marske. Do you want cool descriptions of magic, a high-risk mystery to solve, a secret-magical-side-to-our-world NOT tainted by transphobia, and hot sex scenes? This is the trilogy for you!
4) Rook & Rose trilogy by M. A. Carrick. Grifter with a heart of gold doing her best to secure her and her sister's future by tricking a noble family she's their long lost relative ends up tangled in a magical conspiracy. An epic adventure that's still character focused! It has excellent worldbuilding and so many fascinating people running about it. I've already written fic for this ๐Ÿ˜Š
5) The Unraveled Kingdom trilogy by Rowenna Miller. A story about revolution from the POV of a reluctant revolutionary. A very realistic take on how complex a revolution can be - not shying away from the danger this puts everyone in -while still adding the fantastical element of probability magic.

If you want to see the covers of these books/texts and read more about them, you can hopefully see them over here on GoodReads (I'm hoping my reading challenge list from 2022 is visible to everyone, but GoodReads is a mess, so who knows).
