Once more, I'm doing the lists, and the goals, and trying to catch up everywhere (like here 😅), but I finally think I have stumbled upon the right balance of Goals VS Stress for myself.

As the title says, I don't want to jinx it by celebrating too early, but I feel like myself again 💖 Helps that I've sworn to not work more than 8 hours a day, 5 days a week this year. Funny how much of a change that's already brought on, four weeks into the new year 😉

I'm back to writing! The "you have to do everything so you do nothing"-stress of 2025 is gone at last, which means I can sit down and work more efficiently on line-edits of my closest-to-finished-WIP A Werewolf in October. I'm hoping to print it (just, like, 10 copies, not publish) at the end of this year, but if it's not ready then, it's not ready. It'll never be as polished and error free as a professional work with actual beta-readers and editors etc but I'm not aiming for professional - I'm aiming for a fun thing to have made that I can share with a handful of my friends 😊

Doing my best to return to timed goals instead of accomplishment goals. That is, "work on this story for 30 minutes tonight" instead of "you have to listen to 14 podcast episodes this week". My deadline heavy work life reaaaally infected my way of thinking of my hobbies - but no more, I say!

Since I'm going Slow And Steady Wins The Race, I'm also trying not to fret over being so behind on comments and blog entries here on DW (I'll tell you if I succeed). It's why I've skipped the Snowflake challenge this year - at least for now.

So. In a hopeful mood, despite *gestures at the state of the world*

Been yet another rough work week, but I finally have the energy to get hyped up about my November writing project! I'm aiming to work on (and maybe even finish!) the first draft of The Crawling Dark of Your Lover and hopefully finish it this time around. Might even commission more art for the project once I see how it's going - either to reward or comfort myself 😆

In fandom news, campaign 4 of Critical Role keeps being a blast! I don't have the energy to get into all the things I loved about episode 4 right now, but let's just say that Bolaire, Occtis & Julien remain my favorites thus far and that I long to see where this is going (both re: character development and the plot). Especially how Bolaire's and Hal's friendships evolves/changes after The Revelation 🖤💖

Had to utterly disappear from the Internet and a number of events and hobbies to have the energy to complete my final work weeks, but now I've had a week of vacation time and am starting to feel human again, huzzah!

I've been extra bad at keeping up with DW, so anything posted after the start of June I'm still catching up on. But catch-up I shall 😊

My burnout got reeeeaaally bad (panic-attack-levels bad) but I'm recovering now that I'm off work and no longer in charge of hosting huge events. My plan for the rest of the year is to Chill The Fuck Out and take on 0 responsibilities outside of work, because I want to live past the age of 60...

On that note, I already feel much better 💖 I've had the energy to both finish playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (beautiful game, highly recommend!) and MANAGE TO WRITE SOMETHING AND POST IT!!!! I binged the TV adaptation of The Muderbot Diaries together with my sister yesterday and she gave me a story idea that I've now actually written 💜💜💜 (set in book canon; I'm also working on a TV-canon fic~)

And it's even posted online! Huzzah 🥳🥳🥳🥳

I know this is a lot of shouting and banner waving for a 1.3k story BUT it's been ages since I posted something new that wasn't a fanfic written for an exchange, so I can't help but celebrate 💖

The story can be read over on my writing account [personal profile] booksabaking and is an entry in my Once a Bard and His Friends Took a Train short story collection. This is only the second story in said collection, but at least ten more are on the way (one day 😅 my WIPs might unionize against me). It's called By Firelight and I had such a good time writing it 💚💚💚

A summary of this short story setting: This is the story of a man who ends up immortal completely on accident. This immortality turns out to be contagious. How? Why? He has no idea. It seems to be one of life's little oddities. Sure makes it easier to be queer and do crime though~

Heads up that By Firelight turned out slightly more cosmic horror and less happy-go-lucky-heist-vibes than the rest of the stories I have planned. Then again, I could say the same about the first story Introductions Without Names. Guess I'm working my way up toward the happy-found-family-heist-mood I actually had in mind for these characters 😆

Btw, I wrote the story while listening to Sword Coast Soundscapes' D&D Ambience - Night Camp in Woods and I think that might be an excellent soundtrack to reading the story as well, should anyone like to give it a try 😊

Hope everyone's had as great a Friday as I have! Wishing you all good creative vibes 💖💖💖

Three days working 7-23 (+ a 2 hour commute) are finally, finally over! Never again 😖

Had a wonderful, no-deadlines, no-stress day today where I just got the apartment cleaned up a bit and enjoyed reading back through all my gazillion writing projects 😊 My brain is too mushy for writing right now, but I'm setting up writing plans for my luxurious four day weekend next week 💖

As I promised myself, I'll spend some time gushing joyfully about the things I'm writing, because that's good for the soul.

Firstly, one of my art commissions has been completed! The wonderfully talented arigate drew the initial-antagonist/love interest of my story Mages and Marriage along with a quote from my draft of the book, and it turned out stunning 🤩

Secondly, I've been rereading through all my original WIPs and all my fanfic WIPs since I've read and seen some very inspiring books and videos on writing and want to add "upgrades" to several of my projects 😁 Today, Morning, Evening, Dawn is getting aliens, Of Elves and Dwarrows is losing its prologue and gaining a funeral, and Rån som Råder will be granted the Swedish "dansbanekultur" of my parents' youth~

Hope everyone is having a good weekend (and if you aren't, that things get better for you real soon!) 💙

Making this post now during my morning commute to promise myself that I'll write today 💙

Been watching and reading a lot of good writing advice that clicked with me and I've got several projects I'm super excited to write!

Just hope to have some energy left after work, cause my April schedule is rough

It's going to be a busy three weeks, but then I get three weeks of vacation with family~! Plus, my sister is visiting this Friday, huzzah 🥳🥳🥳

Writing has been going surprisingly well with how burnt out I've been previously 🩵 This weekend I hit 50 000+ new words on my project The Crawling Dark of Your Lover (which I've written a little about over on Tumblr) and I've had a blast while writing 💖💖💖 Will continue on that project, but slow down so I can update the outline and not push myself too much. Don't want to kill the joy!

I've also DM:ed plenty of D&D for both of the campaigns I'm running and there's more to come soon 😊 And a close friend of mine had a big 40 years birthday bash this past weekend. Good good times!

Due to, well, everything that's been revealed about NaNoWriMo's many and awful issues, I've finally deleted my account on their site, and I'm having emotions about that.

If you haven't heard of NaNoWriMo before, it stands for National Novel Writing Month and is a challenge where you write 50 000 words on a project during the month of November. I've been doing NaNoWriMo successfully every year since 2011. It's the one month a year when I've been able to "force/allow" myself to write, because it's been an official challenge other people are doing at the same time, that's fairly well-known.

I'll still try to write 50k+ words during the upcoming month. I've transferred all my data from the NaNo site to TrackBear. I'm even in both a Discord group and a Tumblr challenge that's aiming to cheer each other on and keep the writing going.

It'll be all right. I've not actually lost anything. Not really. Just having strong End of an Era vibes right now and had a rough day at work. Thus, mopey post.

Will hopefully be bright-eyed and full of writing-cheer tomorrow!

Had a very successful writing weekend! I've made fun progress with figuring out how writing works best for me, in the following ways:
  • I'm allowing myself to brainstorm and plot more before I start writing. It's been very freeing! Plus it saves me muscle pain, since I note down plot ideas in notebooks. Less time writing on my laptop = less muscle aches in my back 😅

  • My line-editing has moved over that "it needs to be PERFECT!" bump and headed toward "let's just deal with the sentences that are awkward and/or make no sense and leave the rest as is", saving me a lot of time and energy.

  • Found a new writing tip channel! See video below for one of my favorite videos of theirs.

Also, I finally got that trope meme done! The one that's been going around Dreamwidth and the rest of the internet for like a year by now 😅 Trope meme time under this cut! )

My list of WIPs that aren't fanfics grows ever longer. I've come to accept that my latest project Rån som Råder is a priority right now, 'cause I'm having too much fun brainstorming 😆

Doing my best not to rush things, just enjoy myself and try my hand at an iterative outline this time around, see if that method works for me 😊

Rån som Råder
Summary: Aster wakes up one morning with moss on her back and the wrong kind of tail. She has, without warning, inherited a domain far, faaar to the north, despite being heir to her mother's city domain. Which means a lot of people just died, very suddenly. Aster must travel to her new domain to hand it over to a more suitable candidate - and she might just stumble into the ancient mystery that caused all those deaths.
Fun stuff in it: Nordic myths & folklore re-imagined in a second world fantasy setting (rån/huldrer! vittera! trolls! älvor/alver! fylgjor!), body horror, song magic, rune magic, blue and orange morality, friends-to-lovers, dark secrets.
Influences/inspirations: Folklore and local legends I've grown up with, the graphic novel series Monstress, my longing for Nordic inspired fantasy without vikings or Aesir gods, Köttpolska by Hoven Droven.
How far I've gotten: Still in the early planning stages. I've got Act 1 at least vaguely outlined, but only in my head.
Art? Yes! I've commissioned art from my super skilled friend Linn of both Aster and her BFF/love interest Yrsa 💖
Next step with this: Keeping on brainstorming until I have enough ideas for a full outline.

Here's an embedded video of Hoven Droven's Köttpolska, in case you haven't heard it and you're curious 😊 It's a fun mix of older and more modern style (heads-up, it's a rather loud piece of music)
