Snowflake Challenge #7: Create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.

While I wouldn't say I've been afraid to ask for any of these, I still thought I'd make myself a little wishlist, since tomorrow is my birthday and all ๐Ÿ˜† This will also double as a rec list of cool things ๐Ÿ’–

1) Recommendations for AMVs, fanvids and animatics! Fandom doesn't really matter, but if it's in a fandom I'm familiar with that's a bonus ๐Ÿ’– I used to be really good at finding videos like this, but with how algorithm-broken the internet is, it's getting harder and harder to find new ones. Here's a link to awesome animations (fandom and non-fandom) I've found and an AMV/MEPs list, though my categorizing is a little wishy-washy and mixed ๐Ÿ˜… Also, fandoms I'm more active in get their own playlists, like Critical Role and The Magnus Archives, with a mess of both animatics, interviews and other things related to the fandom.

2) Recommendations of "fake" video games! Aka people who make fake screenshots, manuals and such things for games that don't actually exist and aren't planned to exist either. I've been vaguely aware of and interested in such things for years, but this Supereyepatchwolf video on the subject really got me hooked. I'm even making a few of my own together with my sister and a friend, and I'm always happy to find more!

3) Recommend me artists you love! The internet is so vast and the algorithms so broken that I have a harder and harder time finding new artists to follow. Here are links to some of my favorite artist, as examples:
Alex Ries
Allison Theus/BeastofOblivion
ArcaneGold
Caemiel Lilium
CanaryWitch
Cassandra Jean
Dappermouth/Jenna Barton
Eleth
Eliot B.
Janna Sophia
Kiikiibee/rakugaki
King Cholera/Cheyenne (both some horror and NSFW here)
KM Steere (have a lovely commissions of my late great cat from this artist)
Linnpuzzle (who I extra recommend because she's not only a great artist but also a great friend and great to work with on commissions๐Ÿ’– Link to her tumblr.)
Luce Northstar (has both NSFW & horror art - have commissioned art from them several times and they've been brilliant to work with!)
Morteraphan
N*KIM
Natalia Drawing
Owlyjules/Julie W.
Phobs
pocketss
Ram Lightly (has NSFW content)
Sasha Vinogradova
Secondlina (creator of the glorious "Crow Time" comic!)
semochka (blood and body horror)
Sergei Demidov (some body horror)
Shalizeh7
Shark in a Bottle
SJ Miller (body horror & gore!)
Wolfskulljack (horror elements)
Wrat
(Yuumei) Wenqing Yan

Maaaaan, but this year has rushed by in a whirlwind!!! I am so behind on so many things, but hereโ€™s a little wrap up post โœจ Hope everyone is having a good end of the year, whether you celebrate any particular holidays or not ๐Ÿ’–

First things first, the fics for the Yuletide Fic Exchange have been revealed ๐Ÿคฉ I got super lucky this year and got two wonderful Yuletide fics!!!

For the game Fear & Hunger I got this brilliant worldbuilding-by-historical-document fic:
Ales Bestia, or, the Winged Beast, A Broadside, written for the education and enlightenment of members of the Royal Knights of the Tomb of the Rondonian Empire. Written est. 1862, archived 1927.

For the book series Rook & Rose by M. A. Carrick, I got this wonderful post-canon look at what my favorite character Vargo might be up to:
disturbed circles, "The first thing to know is your tools," Vargo said. "Tell me what they are and why they're important."

Theyโ€™re both exactly the kind of fics I wanted in those fandoms ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–

PS. I recently commissioned more beautiful artwork from my friend Linn, featuring the main character of my story โ€œThe Crawling Dark of Your Loverโ€ and his love interest. Iโ€™ve posted the artwork both on Blusky and on Tumblr, to share the beauty with the Internet ๐Ÿ˜.

Too much inspiration, too little time

I've had Thursday and Friday off work this week and was hoping to get some writing and reading done. I've managed the reading part, but the writing has been limited to world building 'cause I read the latest volume of Monstress (excellent comic series but WITH ALL THE TRIGGER WARNINGS).

Explanation under the cut )

Or you'd think so, if you were one of my oldest friends whose phone calls keep overlapping with me DMing ๐Ÿ˜†

I've had a crazy busy couple of weeks, which is delightful though exhausting. So much roleplaying, both with dice and through LARP, and so many fun hangouts with friends. Both of my D&D groups are back up to being active again and are getting to some important plot things soon~

Could do with some writing time soon, but hey, there are only so many hours in the week ๐Ÿ˜…

Btw, I finally watched RRR! If you've also seen it, I'd love to talk about it ๐Ÿ˜Š I absolutely adore the main dance number:

Time for a challenge combo ๐Ÿ˜Š With challenge 13 being "Rec three (or more) fanworks that you did not create" and 14 being "Try something new", I thought I'd try something new by recommending fanvideos ๐Ÿ˜†

I've recommended books and fics many, many times, but though I am a hoarder of animatics/animations/AMVs/etc, I can't recall every making an actually recommendation list. That changes today!

Fair warning: If the fanvid is of a fandom that's big on horror/gore/etc, there's a non-zero chance of that in the fanvids. Many of them have warnings in the first frames of the videos, but if you're curious about a video and looking to avoid something specific, please comment on this entry and I'll double-check the video(s) in question for you!

Here there be fanvideos! )

Here are five book trilogies I've recently read that I really enjoyed! Posted in alphabetical order, I enjoyed them all equally:

1) Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. Love its wonderful, surreal world. Horror yet not. Will definitely re-read one day!
2) The Children of Time trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky. What if non-human-animals developed 'sentience', in SPAAACE~?! Loved this exploration of self-awareness and how different animal species might take to it should humans meddle with their genetic code. Update: I've been reminded that, unlike myself who think they're adorable, a looot of people are uncomfortable reading about spiders. So yeah, this is a book series about sentient spiders, beware!
3) The Last Binding trilogy by Freya Marske. Do you want cool descriptions of magic, a high-risk mystery to solve, a secret-magical-side-to-our-world NOT tainted by transphobia, and hot sex scenes? This is the trilogy for you!
4) Rook & Rose trilogy by M. A. Carrick. Grifter with a heart of gold doing her best to secure her and her sister's future by tricking a noble family she's their long lost relative ends up tangled in a magical conspiracy. An epic adventure that's still character focused! It has excellent worldbuilding and so many fascinating people running about it. I've already written fic for this ๐Ÿ˜Š
5) The Unraveled Kingdom trilogy by Rowenna Miller. A story about revolution from the POV of a reluctant revolutionary. A very realistic take on how complex a revolution can be - not shying away from the danger this puts everyone in -while still adding the fantastical element of probability magic.

Alan Wake 2, and arguably the whole catalog of Remedy Entertainment's games (nicknamed "Remedyverse"), is what I will be gushing about for this part of the Snowflake Challenge~!

Okay. Oookay. SO. Uhm. Doing my best to not go full rant mode here because this will be an unreadable wall of text if I don't watch out. When I talk about this new-old fandom of mine, I tend to go full Red String And Corkboard Meme. I will do my best to minimize the amount of red string in this post while keeping the red thread, so to speak.

Red String Meme
Visualization of me talking about this fandom.

As with most of my fandoms, I don't recommend Alan Wake 2 to everyone, since nothing is ever made for these mysterious Everyones. But I'll do my best to explain what it is and why I love it so, to hopefully give people an idea if they should check it out or not ๐Ÿ˜Š

That's more than enough preamble - on to the actual reccing!

Our main characters: Alan looking like the wet cat he is and Saga just trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

To not kill everyone's reading feeds, the rest of this goes under a cut:

Iceland was BEAUTIFUL and such an experience and now I am sooo tired and don't want to travel again for years to come XD My parents love to travel, like several people I know, but my sister and I are homebodies who'd prefer to not leave our apartments besides going to visit people we know. That said, I absolutely don't regret or mean to complain about having gone to Iceland!!!! I saw humpback whales! And puffins! And so many waterfalls! <3<3<3

And now that I'm back to 'regular life', I'm so hyped to do some more writing! I have a gazillion Good Omens fics in the works and I had plenty of brainstorming time at the hotels we stayed at, which led to me figuring out that several of my not-fic writing projects actually are set in the same second world universe :D So now there's this long, complicated timeline for several books I've barely finished plotting yet XD Which is good, really, since that means I don't have to edit them so terribly.

As a note to myself, the WIPs in question are, in timeline order:
"Mages & Marriage" -> Placeholder name: The Baron and the Prince -> Placeholder name: The Summit (brand new aro/aro relationship story idea with so much politics too :D) -> Placeholder name: Pride n Prejudice n A Wizard Did It + Placeholder name: Witches and Fae -> Placeholder name: Mystic Trio

Am hoping to spend next weekend mostly on writing, since this one I'm spending catching up with all the people I've not met all summer :D

In other news, I rewatched the 2011 staging of Much Ado About Nothing because I happened upon it in the wild and I find I must nominate it for Yuletide this year again~! I reread the glorious gift fic I got for that fandom last time I requested it and I Crave More XD

Also, people over on Tumblr are writing modern-AU-nerds!Jeeve & Wooster fanfic and I am rolling on the floor XD

We're at week 4 of 2023 and I'm doing pretty well on my New Year's resolutions to myself!

I've managed to only work full time (which is an achievement for me XD), actually sleep enough hours to not be dead on my feet come morning even on the days when I have to get up at 4.30 AM (like tomorrow), and I've replaced all candy and soda with fruits and water and am still doing perfectly fine re: eating and feeling happy :D Am mighty pleased with myself about this <3

My sister and I are in the cosplay planning stages too! Other than repairing and expanding existing cosplays from Mononoke (not Princess, the other one), Critical Role, Okami and DC/Marvel Comics, we're going to be working on colossus outfits from Shadow of the Colossus and new outfits from the Hades game! I'm going to be Persephone in her Hades outfit and I think my sister finally settled on Chef Ghost, with Eurydice as a more long-term goal <3

I'm somehow also heading to a LARP this weekend. Where I'll be singing. Soooo, there be a lot of rehearsing before that~

Finally, I've been reading some excellent books already this year (and right before New Year):

I've made it through Alexandra Rowland's A Taste of Gold and Iron (wonderful bodyguard/prince romance with loyalty a huge focus of the plot + with a smutty epilogue posted on the author's AO3 account) and Some by Virtue Fall (theater drama <3). I've thoroughly enjoyed the latest horror novel by Jonathan Sims of The Magnus Archives podcast, called Family Business, as well as Julia Armfield's Our Wives Under the Sea (eerie and creepy and bittersweetly romantic rather than horrific but definitely good <3). And, on the more classic-ish fantasy front, I and sis at last finished Wolf's Head, Wolf's Heart by Jane Lindskold - still very engaging!

Recommending all five of these books, should any of them seem up your alley! I've written more detailed reviews over on Goodreads.

I made the Yuletide sign up deadline after all, with a letter and everything! Go me! :D Just got my assignment and I feel confident I can write something for it that I hope my recipient will enjoy :)

I've still got a ton of work to do, buuuuut I'm not behind on any of it - I'm just not ahead of work as I usually am, so I've decided to try and let that be okay. I don't need to constantly be ahead of things. I can just work my assigned hours. It will be fine (I say through gritted teeth XD)

Relaxing is sort of working already, which feels great :) I've managed to both be a Good Godmother (had my oldest godchild and her mother over for video game time yesterday - yes, I have more than one godchild, no I'm not the least bit religious, I apparently just attract godchild offers ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ ), catch up on a let's play I've been meaning to watch for...years(?), and am finally stress-free enough to be able to enjoy some reading.

Currently reading and very much enjoying:

And I get to meet a friend I haven't seen in a long time tomorrow! Huzzah!
