New Year, Same Old Me (which I'm happy with :D)

Happy New Year, good people of the Internet!

I've had a great Yuletide and a great New Year's Eve, and I'm sooooo happy that I'm doing so much better than last year :D

It's now officially years since my burnout and my recovery is finally starting to become obvious even to me: no more long periods of illness, no more sudden extreme mood swings (I do get the occasional small ones, but only when I'm alone and not as paralyzing as they used to be) aaaand so much more energy to do things! I've got two D&D campaigns still up and running, I managed to write plenty this year and I've read a lot more than I thought I'd have time to!

All in all, a good year, health-wise :)

I hope to have time to ramble on about my many upcoming (and continued) writing projects I have planned for this year sometime later this week. But first, I will write a bit about what I read this year~!

During 2019 I managed to read:
Overview of some book stats for 2019
Pretty happy with that! I mean, with how stressed out I've been about other things, I really thought I'd end up reading only the 12 books I'd challenged myself to get through, but ~surprise~, I got through so many more! Here are very short reactions to what I've read (my Goodreads account has slightly longer reviews in case anyone is curious to read those):

The Chronicles of Exandria: The Legend of Vox Machina Volume 2 by Matthew Mercer - great book for fans of the show! Much lovely art <3

The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling - I read all of it this year and I'm so sad I'm all out of books now ;_; Oh well, there's always fanfiction!

Icarus at the Edge of Time by Brian Greene - Lovely images. Sad story.

Jagannath by Karin Tidbeck - I actually liked reading these short stories translated to English. They were all wonderfully weird.

Ankomnsten by Shaun Tan - I'm so happy I finally found a copy of this book to buy! Though it has no words, its artwork and story gives me all the feels <3

Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff - A wonderfully fresh take on the lovecraftian brand of cosmic horror!

The Wicked+The Divine by Kieron Gillen (read some volumes) - Interesting, but not completely my thing. Too much teen drama, I think (no hate on teenagers, I'm just not so drawn in by fictional teen drama, realistic or no).

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss - This book showed me beyond the shadow of a doubt that Rothfuss' writing isn't for me. I have a hard time visualizing things 'in my mind's eye' so to speak, and thus books that rely heavily on me just picturing things without there being any plot or character development are...yeah, not fun.

The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan - Finishing this wonderful series was bittersweet because, like with the "Nightrunner" series there are now no more books of this for me ;_; Highly recced!

Hellblazer by Garth Ennis - Read one of his books. It was good, but not mind-blowing.

Ooku by Fumi Yoshinaga - Have now read several of these and they continue to be an interesting alt-history story. But sooooo sad ;_;

The Unwritten by Mike Carey - Read the final book in the series. It was good.

The Long Cosmos by Stephen Baxter & Terry Pratchett - Finished this book purely because I'm a completionist. Sorry, fellas, I just couldn't get into it.

Hur Mår Maten? by Per Jensen - Full of interesting yet horrifying facts about the Swedish meat industry!

Rails by Elva Birch - Lovely story set in an interesting world! (Full disclosure: I am friends with the author, so while I don't feel biased I probably am XD Still rec it though!)

Vei by Sara Bergmark Elfgren - Read part 2 and that ending made me love this comic! Love this world <3

Out of Skin by Emily Carroll - Emily Carroll is a genius at horror and I should read everything ever created by her!

The Fisherman by John Langan - More good cosmic horror! This one was very lovecraftian, but I think it avoided the worst tropes from that genre, at least mostly.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - This one came out of left field and surprised me big time! I had no idea I could be so invested in such a bleak story, and that it could leave me so pumped up despite its bleakness. Highly recced!

A Conspiracy of Truths by Alexandra Rowland - Wonderful story about storytelling! Highly recced!

Monstress by Marjorie M. Liu - Am continuing reading this comic and it is SOOOO GOOOD! SO GOOD Y'ALL!

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley - Maaaan, Kameron Hurley is so good at writing horribly violent and brutal settings and then just showering me in wonderful hope! Engaging from start to finish, highly recced!

The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner - I liked this book better than the first one! Though the main character getting his hand fairly-graphically chopped off at the start of the story came at a bad time for me personally, so that put me off the book for a bit. Will likely continue this series, eventually.

The Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers - Just finished this trilogy and I ADORE IT! Such a cozy, feel-good series <3 I love it to bits, highly recced!

The Inheritance Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin - I've read the first book and really liked it! Will continue with the next one as soon as I can get my hands on it <3 Highly recced!
