Focusing on the Positive~
I'm having a great vacation, all things considered 💖 Thought I'd write down the good things, to take my mind off the less fun things that happened pre-holidays.
1) I'm pleased with the fic I wrote for Yuletide and got a lovely Childermass/Segundus fic for the Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell fandom as gift, which can be read over here. And though I didn't get around to writing any treats or pinch hits due to Everything, I can always try my hands at a New Year's Resolution fic or two!
2) Been watching a lot of interesting movies with the family, The Green Knight, Encanto and the latest James Bond being the most memorable. We're going to try that League of Legends TV show on Netflix that all of Tumblr and Twitter are posting about, and likely also the live action Cowboy Bebop too. Much to look forward to!
3) Though I haven't had time to write much, I'm still inspired and happy with what I've worked on thus far 😄
4) Got a lot of wonderful books as Yule gifts! I'm currently reading Turning Darkness Into Light by Marie Brennan, the continuation of her Memoirs of Lady Trent series that I had no idea existed until a few weeks ago. Sister and I are thoroughly enjoying it!
5) D&D games I DM are scheduled Thursday and Saturday~!
6) Got myself the game Hades as a Yule gift. Sister and I are having way too much fun with it 🤣 My oh frikkin my, Hades has impressed me on every possible level of game design! A mystery plot that's intriguing instead of obtuse, fun gameplay, varied dialogue that's fully voice-acted, and a whole bunch of interesting characters to get invested in 💖💖💖💖
I put off playing Hades for a long time (and am thus waaaay behind the hype) because I didn't have the time and also because it only came out for console way later than for PC and I'm terrible about playing games on PC these days. But boy am I glad I finally did! It's been a long time since I had this much fun playing a game!
Favorite things thus far
- Thanatos and Zagreus' relationship. Every interaction they have feels genuine, like there's a long history between them. Definitely ship it~!
- The Hydra. I don't know how popular the different bosses are in the fandom (trying to avoid all spoilers), but it's easily the boss fight where I have the most fun 😁
- The system of prophecies encouraging you to seek out new weapon upgrades, boon combinations, etc. I'm the kind of video game player who sticks to using one kind of magic/weapon/etc unless the game gives me a reason to try the variety on offer, and this game sure has made it easy and fun to switch and mix stuff!
- The interpersonal mysteries we've got going! I want to know everything about the characters and this version of their stories! Sometimes I can't wait to die while escaping so I can see what happens next back at the House 😆 Every time I see a bottle of nectar as a prize I head straight for it!
- The "whole" of the game design. It's been a long time since I've played a game where I've felt no need to look up a guide for anything. Nothing feels wasted or like busywork, despite it being a roguelike. That's beyond impressive!
Basically, if you like video games and you haven't played Hades, I beyond recommend it!
