Once more I've made the mistake of reading a good book far too late.

Nah, not really, I'm just being dramatic XD

I finished The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley yesterday and I enjoyed it immensely! It's been a long time since I read a science fiction book that I didn't feel put off by once. Which is kinda ironic since The Stars Are Legion is a book full of gore and body horror, which usually isn't my thing at all (except when it is, obviously - my favorite horror movie is The Thing).

Now, this is a book I wish I'd had the chance to nominate for Yuletide. Seriously, I want more of this universe and I especially want crossovers with other science fiction series I like! I don't care if it's Mass Effect or Star Trek, the characters in Legion need to meet some of my other favorite characters BECAUSE REASONS!

This said, I have no idea who else would like this book. Whenever I talk about it I just want to blurt out ALL FEMALE W|W HORROR SCIFI HOPEFUL MYSTERY STORY SET IN WORLD-SHIPS DESIGNED BY H. R. GIGER!!! with far too much enthusiasm, so that might scare some people off. This said, that description pretty much sums up the book, if crudely, so you might understand why it's a bit of a "not for everyone"-kind of book. Though it's not like any book is for everyone, so meh.

The story focuses on two POV characters, Zan and Jayd. They've both go some history but at first we don't know what kind because Zan has amnesia and Jayd is very good at keeping her thoughts to herself, even when you're inside her head.

The mystery is this:
Zan wakes up in what appears to be the hospital part of a world-ship, no memory of who she is or where, though she has words for what she sees around her. Another woman, called Jayd, tells Zan that she's returned from once more failing to conquer the world-ship Mokshi, and that every time she's come back without her memory. Jayd claims that she and Zan are sisters, which concerns Zan seeing as her feelings for Jayd are...not sisterly, unless your a pair of twins in Game of Thrones.

Jayd, as we soon see, is a very dual person. She seems to return the feelings Zan has for her but at the same time she seems very ready to sacrifice everything and everyone for some unknown goal that she and Zan agreed on back when Zan had her memory. But, as present!Zan puts it, are Jayd and past!Zan good people? Is their goal to save their people or to save themselves? Does Zan want to be the person she was before she lost her memory? Also, everything is made of flesh. WHY IS EVERYTHING MADE OF FLESH?

If that sounds interesting to you, check it out! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :D
