We are finally approaching the end. Soon the Final Quest will have ended and we can all find peace. Hopefully there will be something left of the fandom by then...

We start somewhere in the vicinity of the main Wolfrider holt with some dude. I assume he's suppose to be the main antagonist since he's the commander of the attack. We might even have seen him before, but I honestly don't remember or care at this point. Oh, and that local guy who made contact with the Djunslanders a few issues ago is apparently a disgraced descendant of Shuna's first husband. Because of course he is *sigh*

The Go-Backs, Rayek and Windkin fight guerilla style against the humans. Teir and Ember prefer to defend rather than attack. Tyleet goes with Shuna, Shenshen and a hidden Windkin to reassure the local humans' chief of chiefs that the elves won't be harming them with their magical fighting.

Oh, and one of the Go-Backs called the no-longer-with-us Moonshade a "new High One", which is. Okay. That. Sure is a thing.

Anyways, Tyleet's talk with the human chief of chiefs leads to a short speech about how Awesome Cutter Is (of course) and also shows some general scenes form the holts to illustrate time passing. It ends with a Go-Back reassuring Teir that the deer mounts he supposedly will be supplying them with won't be dragged into battle. The Go-Back also asks that his tribe be allowed to do the bleeding, not the Wolfriders, because Wolfriders take losing tribe mates much harder.

More fighting happens. The Djunsland commander narrates aloud that the guerilla attacks have gotten the Djunslanders down to half their original numbers. He wants the Hill-Hopper tribe as slaves. This exposition is interrupted by Yun, Rayek, Ekuar, Mender, Dart, Chot and assorted Go-Backs arriving in the Palace Pod to wreak havoc. Dart and Mender share a brief sending about killing or not killing (Dart is shooting to wound, Mender instant-kills with his touch). Yun is injured in an explosion and Rayek flies off with Ekuar because he's getting reckless with his rockshaping.

In the end, the elves retreat with the Palace Pod in tiny-Palace-Form because without Yun conscious they can't fly it. The human commander yells at the Hill-Hopper traitor, only to realize they're actually very close to the Wolfrider holt. The humans number less than "nine eights" (aka less than 72 people) but they see smoke coming from a rock-formation, and the Hill-Hopper traitor speaks of trolls. The commander orders 20 men to attack the trolls and take weapons form them, while the rest head for the Father Tree. The 20 men drop a bomb down into the troll tunnels.

Picknose, Two-Edge, Treestump, Clearbrook, Ahdri, and a number of trolls head to the surface to counter attack. Mender and Dart are there too (I think, the establishing shots are all over the place) with Dart trying to stop Mender from...attacking people? Or something? The dialogue is one frame and goes:
Mender - "Curse it, Dart! I can kill more-"
Dart - "-and poison your heart for the healings you must do?"

Yeah, I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean or if they're even at the site of the battle. The battle goes well for the troll-elf team. 20 people go down to 5, one of them shooting the traitor Hill-Hopper for leading them into slaughter. Treestump runs after two fleeing humans, cursing that he has no wolf but also confirming that no Wolfrider would bring a wolf near the humans' guns. Treestump downs one of them, but gets shot by the other.

Back at the holt, Leetah senses Treestump getting hurt despite him being way out of sending range. She wants to go to him, but is stopped by everyone else, especially Strongbow. Ember talks about how things have to be like in Bearclaw's days now, with life-bearers staying hidden, and Strongbow barks at Leetah to den hide. She finally does this, for which Cutter thanks Strongbow.

A thing I forgot to mention, because it's so silly: Leetah breaks out into song at random moments in the comic. Yes. Lyrics with little music notes next to the words. Hear me sigh deeply. Leetah sings a bit now while we flash to how Two-Edge knocks down the human trying to shoot Treestump again, throws Treestump up on his back, and gets shot by said human while retreating with Treestump.

The elves and trolls plus their local human co-fighters (who apparently were there helping, but weren't very well shown) escape underground. Mender struggles against Dart, wanting to go back up to the surface and finish the last humans off, while Dart begs him to heal the dying people in the cave. I'm guessing this is supposed to illustrate how using anti-healing can affect an elf' psyche, but it's a bit late in the game to address it in issue 23 of 24 me thinks.

Ahdri is comforting Two-Edge who says Mender should tend to others first. Ahdri is proud of this show of kindness and calls him lovemate.

While Mender tends to the wounded we skip to sunset at the holt. The Djunslanders have arrived and they're aiming for the Father Tree. Rayek and Scouter watch from its top and Rayek grumbles about being ordered to stay there and guard the holt instead of Cutter allowing him to fight.

...why is Rayek still among his fellow elves with Winnowill inside his head??? Even with the Palace gone, wasn't the whole point of him taking in her spirit that he'd need to wander the earth, avoiding all other elves? Are we retconing everything Elfquest? I think I'm having a nosebleed at this point.

Ember, Teir and Cutter pump up the cannon fodder aka the Go-Backs, all decked out in armor and mounted on deer. Cutter orders the Go-Backs to make the humans waste their bullets shooting at their armor. The Wolfriders will join the fight when the bullets are out. Redlance makes a temporary hole in the thorn wall and the Go-Backs are off, eager and hungry for a fight!

We get more of Leetah's singing while the Go-Backs bleed, die and kill on the battlefield, fighting 50-ish humans. The father of Venka's cub gets badly hurt and plans on heading for the Palace to visit his fawn, but a random female Go-Back says there's no need since they've all already won.

What does random Go-Back mean by this? Why that the Wolfriders are coming out to join the fight, with Shuna also leading her own army of Hill-Hoppers. Shuna gives a speech to the Djunslanders, saying who she is and that elves are totally cool alien friends that there's no need to kill, so please just shut up and go home, okay?

As you can guess, the Djunsland commander dismisses her speech as cursed drivel and calls Shuna lower than savage. Kimo, deciding he's tired of life or something, changes from wolf to elf and approaches the commander completely unarmed, giving a feelingly feelsy speech about how the elves just want to life, maaaan, why can't you just leave us alone~?

To no one's surprise, the commander takes his huge whip and pulls Kimo up into his saddle, Indiana Jones style. Kimo is now a hostage. Good job, Kimo. Good. Job.

With a hostage, the Djunslanders gain a somewhat upper hand despite being surrounded and outnumbered. The commander realizes that Cutter is the leader and tells him to retreat or Kimo dies. Kimo thinks about how wrong and stupid approaching the leader of the enemy unarmed was, because hindsight is 20/20.

When Cutter demands the Djunsland commander see reason, one of the Djunsland soldiers panics and shoots at him, gracing his side. Strongbow, being the nr 1 chief fanboy he is, grabs a gun, knows how to aim and shoot the damned thing somehow, and kills the human soldier next to the commander. Yup. After shooting, Strongbow thinks "Eyrn...lifemate...it's the end of the Way!" because that seems to be the never ending repeating theme of this story that goes nowhere.

Kimo, being the utter drama queen he is, decides his hostage situation is too big of a hassle. His solution? Suicide.

Yeah.

Suicide.

Kimo leans forward and cuts his own throat on the dagger the Djunsland commander is threatening him with. He apparently does this so well he dies instantly. Because that's how that works. I mean, I get that the Pinis obviously have no ideas how guns work (especially not old fashioned guns like the Djunslanders have) but surely they must know how daggers and knives are used? I mean, Leetah isn't that far away, if someone dived for Kimo they should be able to heal him.

But nope, that's not what happens. Instead, Kimo is super dead and the elves are super angry, and the Djunslanders lose big. A handful of Djunslanders survive, among them the commander, and are taken captive.

We cut to Shuna mourning Kimo and telling the commander how the elves always will win and protect the lands, and whatever else. It's made very clear that Kimo and Shuna were Super Close.

You know...I'm starting to suspect Kimo died here only so the Pinis could deny to their graves the relationship Kimo and Dart had before this mad final series happened. Final Quest should have been called Retcon the Series :/

Soooo, the Djunsland commander says he'll surrender, but only if he gets to do it at the foot of the Father Tree, together with two of his most trusted soldiers. The elves, being characters in Final Quest, agree to this. And the humans suicide bomb the Father Tree.

Yes. That happens. Am I reading Avatar? Is that what I'm reading? Are the elves about to shapechanging into giant blue cat-people soon?

So yeah, the Father Tree goes BOOOM, Rayek shields Ember and Teir from the explosion, Leetah is shown inside a tree den sending to Cutter (but it's a confusing shot because Leetah is shown in a whole and not-on-fire den together with Petalwing, after the Father Tree has already exploded...). Our final shot is of Shuna, yelling and rushing toward the Father Tree, getting stabbed in the back with a sword by the Djunsland commander.

...I'm so happy the next issue will be the final one, because this is such a mess.

Welp. That was an issue. Thanks again for the narration. I'd say it's great to be able to follow along but.... yeah. One more. :/
