I'm doing challenge 4 to 7 in one post, because I've got so much fun stuff going on right now (both here on DW and elsewhere) that I'll miss out on these otherwise π
Challenge #4: Ice Breaker
So, what about me can I say that's not in my intro post or fandom list already? Well, here are 5 semi-random facts about me βΊοΈ
1. Way back when I was a teenager (20-ish years ago), I was convinced I was an introvert. Why? Because I liked nerdy things and nerds were "supposed to" be introverts + my teenage years were full of other teenagers who were less than kind to the people around them. Buuuut I've come to realize that 1) the introvert vs extrovert labeling is not really how most humans work, and 2) I am Very Much Not an introvert. I'm really good at entertaining myself and I enjoy being on my own, but I LOVE hanging out with people! I will be the last person still talking at any party. I will make all the phone calls. I will miss my buss because I can't stop enjoying a conversation. Just love to chat with people, whether it's in person or via text ππππ
2. Writing is my main hobby - which sadly is hard to match up with being social since it's tricky to do as a group activity. Not impossible, but I suck at writing-in-groups. That said, I love all aspects of writing! I love outlining, I love working on the drafts, I love line-editing π I also love hearing about how other people write, discussing writing tips and hearing about other peoples writing projects! All the writing love!!!
3. I absolutely love hearing about other people's interests! Doesn't matter if it's an interest we share or not, I just adore it when people are joyfully telling me about a thing they like πππ
4. While I lack all maternal instincts (I don't hate babies or children, I just have no desire to have any of my own and I don't think they're cute), I have a sort of "reverse" one: if I see an elderly person, I INSTANTLY go into "I would die for you"-mode. Unless they say something terrible, of course, but my instinctual reaction is always Must Protect The Adorable Elderly. I have no clue why this is.
5. I've been a vegetarian since I was 12. Not for any actual moral reasons (though I do think animals needlessly suffering is terrible and that the meat industry in its current form has Many Problems). No, I just saw one of my classmates get to skip the line and get better food at lunch in school and went, "Hmmm. That seems like an advantage. School vegetarian is what I'll be!" Next thing I know, my parents are going "Oh, you want to be a vegetarian? That's super neat! We'll start making vegetarian food for you at home too" aaaand before I knew it, my taste buds had decided all meat Tastes Like Death. So yeah, accidental vegetarian for life π My body simply wasn't designed to eat meat, go figure~
Challenge #5: Picture Scavenger Hunt
Linking to my Tumblr for this one since posting pictures here in DW takes a bit more work. I only skipped nr 4 because I feel awkward singling someone out like that, pro or non-pro. You can rightfully assume I want to meet all the people I've ever enjoyed the works of, pros and non-pros alike!
Challenge #6: Talk About a Canon You Love (this challenge is To Be Continued and not complete)
There are soooo many fandoms I adore, but my current obsession are the video games made by Remedy Entertainment, so that's what I pretty much have to talk about π Will make a separate post for that though (hopefully tomorrow) because this entry is getting long enough as is π
Challenge #7: Make a List of Fannish and/or Creative Resources
Keeping to the Remedy Entertainment theme, here are two great videos for understanding its very tangled canon!
An explanation of Alan Wake's canon
An exploration of how all the Remedy Entertainment games link together
Oh, and as a bonus, and since I'm finally reading Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, here's a super neat and spoiler free introduction to the setting of the book series and its "rules" of necromancy!

This is going to sound so weird, but I have this with nuns lmao If I see a nun I'm always like :D :D :D nun! :D :D :D
And that Locked Tomb primer would have been so useful to me when Gideon came out because I read that and understood less than nothing and never continued the series :( I'm bookmarking the vid and might give the series another try.

The Locked Tomb is sure A Lot to get into π I think the reason I even got into the series was because I'd heard it had similar elements to Homestuck (which I do believe Muir has taken some inspiration from, though I could be incorrect about that). That prepped me for the all-over-the-place worldbuilding and odd approach to mysteries and how to solve them. I've definitely enjoyed all three books we've gotten thus far, so I do recommend them! Buuut yeah, having a character gallery and pre-understanding of what the setting even is, is DEFINITIVELY helpful, because it's all...Much π

Yeah, I'm not at all familiar with Homestuck either? So I mostly felt like I got dumped into a world where the author forgot they had to explain some things to me :( Maybe I will have an easier time with it if I do some research in advance about how the world works! I also found out the audiobook is available to me and that could be helpful too.

Yeah, The Locked Tomb definitely has a very 'sink or swim' approach to its readers and I kinda cheated by being primed by similar canons ahead of time π I absolutely recommend reading up on the world ahead of time if that's what killed the fun for you the first time around - let me know if you want some recs for sources and if you'd prefer spoilers or no spoilers in them! And I've heard good things about the audiobook π€

The main cast, lined up in order of "second house" to "ninth house"
Another main cast interpretation, also from second to ninth house
A beautiful take on a scene very early on in the book and another early scene by the same artist.
If you've seen the video and the art and still have things tripping you up about the book world, just let me know and I'll do my best to find more non-spoilery sources to help π Each book is a mystery that's very related to how the world works and what's going on with the necromancy, so I don't want to accidentally ruin that fun journey of discovery for you!

Okay, I'm excited to give this another try because I do love (murder) mysteries in general and now that I have a basic handle on the universe?? No confusion can stop me. It also helps that I have no memory of how things were solved in the first book :D

I like the story of how you became a vegetarian.

And I too love hearing people's writerly hot-takes, I just usually hate talking about my own writing journey. π€£

I totally respect only wanting to share things about your writing that makes you comfortable - even if that is Nothing. Meanwhile, I LOVE ranting about how I'm testing different writing tips, how I outline and brainstorm stories, etc etc etc, aaand sometimes that distracts from getting any actual writing done π

Looking at your photos, I'm instantly in love with both your dragon and your scarf! I love dragons! Especially iridescent dragons. And the scarf is just so cool! Your sister is so talented. You had great choices all around.
I'll also be sure to use your resources for when I inevitably end up playing some Remedy games!

I too ADORE my dragon and scarf ππππ€π€π€ They are so pretty and wonderful πππ And yes, my sister is crazy good at so many things, knitting being one of them - I'm very lucky to have her as my sister πππ
Yay! I hope you have fun whenever and whichever Remedy game you pick to play π

Ahaha, that is a) incredible and b) good thinking on her part! You wouldn't want to be bound in the darkness by your scarf after all XD

OMG YES! I was once sitting with two photographers, both geeking out about their cameras and stuff. I didn't understand a word, it could have been Martian, but they were so excited and it was wonderful!
It's one of things I love about DW is hearing people talk about their passions and what excites them <3

Yay for hearing people talk about things they love! People being excited about things is just so wonderful - as you said, fully comprehending the thing they're joyful about is not a must, and it can actually be super fun to hear someone happily rant about something you have 0 knowledge about π Dreamwidth is indeed a goldmine for getting to read about things people are enthusiastic about and it's beyond delightful!
